Hamas Leader Calls For New 'Intifada' After President Trump's Jerusalem Announcement

Reuters: Hamas calls for Palestinian uprising in response to Trump's Jerusalem plan

JERUSALEM/GAZA (Reuters) - The Islamist group Hamas urged Palestinians on Thursday to abandon peace efforts and launch a new uprising against Israel in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as its capital.

The Israeli military said it was reinforcing troops in the occupied West Bank, deploying several new army battalions and putting other forces on standby, describing the measures as part of its “readiness for possible developments”.

Protests so far have been scattered and largely non-violent.

But dozens of Palestinians gathered at two points on the Gaza border fence with Israel and threw rocks at soldiers on the other side. Inside Gaza, thousands of Palestinians rallied, some chanting: “Death to America! Death to the fool Trump!” and burning tires.

WNU Editor: I am surprised by the lack of reaction "on the Arab street" to this announcement. I did expect demonstrations, burning the US flag, burning Trump effigies, etc. .... and it has happened (and is happening) .... but it is certainly less than in the past. This is probably going to change later today, and definitely tomorrow after Friday prayers. But a sustained intifada? We shall see.

There already is a sustained intifada. I wasn't aware that they ever stopped. Before this they were really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really mad at us and Israel. Now I suppose they will be really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really mad at us and Israel.

An army researcher once noticed that there was a certain pattern that led to bloodshed, chaotic scenes and protests on the streets in Baghdad and other places in the middle east. Do you know what the changing factor was that one evening or night led to bloodshed and not other nights? The presence or absence of foodstalls that came out in the evening and caused people to stat out longer. The footstalls attracted some more people and in turn the masses grew and stayed out longer, until finally a boiling point was reached and protests became violent. In army operations today, at least in urban areas, it is common to prohibit these food stalls to stay open long in the nights and cause a prolonged aggregation of people. It's those little patterns that can make all the difference. (Mentioned in the book Tipping point)

To your point: I think they are just tired of it. There's only so many times you can burn the American flag until you realise that at least part of the problem is your own people. I hope they are at this point now.

New world for those despots. The USA is an permanent energy superpower on a par with Saudi Arabia and Russia. USA oil imports from the Middle East are easily offset so they lack leverage over the Jerusalem decision. Second they need us far more than we need them. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Jordan will fall to Iran and its proxies without the protection of the US. Petro dollar is the only leverage the Arabs have, while powerful, wielding it to hurt the US causes them great damage as well.
