The Ukraine Truce Is Fragile

Bloomberg: Ukraine, Rebels Trade Cease-Fire Violation Accusations

(Bloomberg) -- The Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatists traded accusations over cease-fire violations on Thursday as the Kremlin said it was sending two more convoys with humanitarian aid to eastern Ukraine.

Rebels violated the truce 49 times in the past 24 hours, military spokesman Anatoliy Stelmakh told reporters in Kiev. There were eight attacks at Shyrokyne, east of the strategically important city of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov, he said. Rebels in Donetsk said Ukrainian forces are violating the truce daily, according to news service RIA Novosti.

“There are regular, lower-level military exchanges at Shyrokyne and at what’s left of Donetsk airport,” Joerg Forbrig, senior program director at the German Marshall Fund in Berlin, said by phone. “They have logistical value to the separatists and symbolic value to the Ukrainian government. The lull we’re seeing now will likely end in a flareup of fighting and these two areas will be the future hotspots.”

WNU Editor: Both sides are now getting into a routine of accusing the other side of truce violations. What concerns me is that there has been zero movement on the political front .... no talks, no discussions ... there are not even talking about having talks. This is an ominous development, and it will all but guarantee a resumption of hostilities in the coming weeks.
